Jordan Mackay Gets ‘Buzzed’ At Paris’s Top Restaurant

Something that’s been on our to-do list for a while, and that doesn’t currently seem any closer to getting done since we first decided we wanted to do it, is the solo meal at a fancy restaurant. The restaurant doesn’t have to be a Michelin star, necessarily, but it should be a few notches above the neighborhood bistro. It’s one of those things we’d like to do in theory, but gets easily put off because it might be a little uncomfortable, and there are plenty of other things to spend about $100 on.

So we were extra impressed to read 7x7 wine and spirits editor (and Buzzed blog writer) Jordan Mackay’s account not just of lunch at one of the world’s finest restaurants, but a solo dining experience at that. Via Coldmud, we were directed to this article at Table Matters, in which Mackay relates the highs and lows of dropping $650 on lunch at L’Ambroisie:

“I felt a satisfying warmth bloom in my chest, a glow of pure pleasure. I began sharing grins with the waiters (all five of them) on their frequent stops by my table to refill my wine or water,” Mackay writes of his growing enthusiasm mid-meal, only to be followed by the stark realization, “It was only at lunch the next day, confronted with the cold reality of facing average cuisine again, that I recalled my credit card and the great damage I had inflicted on it. Then I became sad.”

It’s a good read and sounds like the lunch experience of a lifetime. Check it.
