Fox News’ Megyn Kelly Dines Out After Sparring With Bill O’Reilly
After eight years as a lawyer, America's Newsroom co-host Megyn Kelly was burned-out. Picking up her interest in journalism from her days at Syracuse University, Megyn put together a reel and "essentially barged into the news director’s office at the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C., and told him he had to give me a job." Aggressiveness serves Kelly well on her own show, and in her role as a legal analyst on The O'Reilly Factor where she first contested Bill O'Reilly during the Anna Nicole Smith trial. (She thought Smith should get the money.) As she prepares to cover the inaugural ball on Tuesday, we asked Kelly how she keeps up her strength in the swashbuckling world of Fox.
Saturday, January 10
On Saturday I was out in Scottsdale, Arizona, to accept an award from a charity group out there that I love called Childhelp. I was at the Fairmont Princess Hotel and I had an egg-white omelet with tomatoes and dry wheat toast and French-press coffee. I take cream and half a Splenda.
For lunch, my husband and I split a chicken quesadilla poolside. Sort of amazing looking out the window now and thinking there was any pool involved in this week.
[At the ceremony] I had filet and a mixed green salad and a glass of pinot noir. They served chocolate molten lava cake, but I didn’t eat it. I was good that night. I never used to eat dessert before I married my husband, and he loves dessert, so I now usually have a couple bites of it. You’re sort of fooling yourself into believing that you haven't been bad.
Sunday, January 11
Sunday we flew home, so I had a tomato quiche on the airplane, U.S. Air. The group flew us first class for the honor, so [food] still comes with the ticket up there.
For dinner we went over to Red Cat. We go there all the time. And a lot of the time we’ll just sit at their bar and eat appetizers for our dinner. But we were pretty hungry that night, so we had a real meal with some friends of ours. I had an endive salad followed by roast chicken with the skin on it, but I didn’t eat the skin. But it’s really flavorful when you order it with the skin on it, it’s more juicy than otherwise. It was [with] mashed potatoes. I’m not a big mashed-potato gal. I try to steer clear of the starches because they’re the devil. The four of us split a bottle of cabernet. My husband did the ordering, I can’t tell you what kind. We did not get dessert there, but we went over and had some cupcakes from Billy’s Bakery. I had vanilla cake with vanilla icing. Even though that, too, is the devil, a girl’s gotta live.
Monday, January 12
Monday morning I had Fage yogurt. That’s what I have almost every day, plain non-fat with some All-Bran in it. I usually take it in with me. The first thing I have in the morning is a small Dean & Deluca coffee, then I get my hair and makeup done here, and then in sort of the last half an hour before we go on the air, I have my yogurt, to get me through my show. I’m usually not ready to eat when I get up at five in the morning.
My show goes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and we have a post-game meeting where we talk about what worked and what didn’t work and what we want to do the next day, and usually I’m back at my desk around noon. On Monday, I had an endive salad from Le Grainne on Ninth Avenue and it comes with Gorgonzola and walnuts, neither of which I got. It comes with endives and grapes, and I added chicken and tomatoes and balsamic dressing. Later, I had a GG bran crispbread with Laughing Cow light spreadable cheese as a snack.
Dinner was home-cooked. It was chicken with low-fat ricotta cheese with tomato sauce and tomato and grilled onions. We had jasmine rice. I cooked it. I got a few in the arsenal. He’s got pork tenderloins, he’s got a bunch of fish he can do, but I don’t eat fish, so poor thing now claims he can do around ten fish dishes. I am convinced that I had some sort of a fish trauma when I was a child because I think it’s a psychological aversion. If you give it to me and I don’t know it’s fish and it doesn’t taste fishy, you know like in a California roll, I can eat it. But if I know it’s fish I won’t like it. My grandparents used to own a boatyard and we would spend a month every summer with them, so I’m convinced something happened there. Like I saw some fish or was attacked by some fish, I have no idea.
Tuesday, January 13
Tuesday morning, same thing for breakfast. Not very exciting. And for lunch, I had what we fondly refer to as the engagement sandwich because it just happens to be the sandwich my husband and I ate the day we got engaged, which is smoked turkey [and] Havarti cheese on a whole-wheat pita [with] low-fat mayo. We make it.
On a normal basis I get home between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. I get in around 5:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays I always stay late because I have to do The O’Reilly Factor, so I don’t get home those days until 7:30, 8. Usually what happens is I stay, I work straight through, and I go out to dinner after.
On Tuesday I went to Izakaya Ten. Since it’s a sushi place, obviously I have limited options, but this place is so adorable we go there a lot anyway. So I had the pork gyoza and an avocado roll. We tried the green-tea ice cream. Which tastes exactly like green tea, only in an ice cream. It was okay.
Wednesday, January 14
Wednesday, I did mix it up. I got a little crazy and I had a Zone omelette. I loosely follow the Zone, just as a general dietary principle. Nowhere near what you’re actually supposed to do, but I like that way of eating. Anyway, I like their frozen meals when I’m in a pinch. I get it from FreshDirect when I do my online grocery shopping. It’s basically egg white, low-fat cheese, and red peppers. It comes with two slices of potato.
For lunch I had a Café Metro salad, which had baby spinach, chicken, tomatoes, chickpeas, and fat-free balsamic.
I met your photographer at salt, one of my favorite restaurants in New York, and [my husband and I] split honey-glazed dates wrapped in bacon. It’s like their signature appetizer, which they tried to get rid of and then everyone in the restaurant protested and they were forced to bring it back. And then we had whole-wheat pasta with sausage, crumbled? I think there were tomatoes in there. It’s on their website if you actually care to look it up. [Whole-wheat fettuccine with homemade sweet sausage, mushroom fricassee, and ricotta.] No dessert. You try that pasta and you don’t have room for dessert. I don’t [have bread]. That is the one thing my husband does that I am able to resist at the table. We had a glass of Ulacia Getariako Txakolina. I actually wrote it down because I liked it. It’s really good. It was, like, effervescent.
Thursday, January 15
I had Fage. Boring, right? I had it with the All-Bran and the coffee. I barely like coffee, it’s just a staple of my job. I made it all the way through college and law school without ever drinking coffee — and then my first year of practicing law, I just broke down. I pretty much only use it as a pick-me-up in the mornings. I never have more than one cup.
