Recession-Ready Eats: Sandwiches, Sides, and Clam Pies

Bargain of the Week is a new feature in New York, and 50 dumplings for $9.95 is a fine introduction. Rob and Robin announced Porchetta’s opening last week, and the Underground Gourmet thinks the Tuscan street food tastes like four stars. Opening this week is Lugo Caffè, an Italian restaurant near MSG operated by the owners of Lugo’s Menswear; you can imagine what the waiters are wearing. Also check out AQ Kafé for a Nordic breakfast; try Lebanese at Naya Mezze & Grill in midtown; and pick up financial advice from an investment banker turned restaurateur at Bistrouge. Cauliflower returns to the Greenmarket, and the Robs got a cauliflower bread pudding recipe from the Redhead’s chef-partner Meg Grace. A new season means new menus, which means new sides, and Rob and Robin have selected a few to look for, including Siberian Kale, root-beer floats at Ssäm Bar, and hot (hot!) Alidoro sandwiches. Gael Greene awards Compass an “A for perseverance” on its third outing and commends the $35 prix fixe menu. But if you’re looking for a slice, Robin and Rob track the rise of the clam pie, and recommend six pizzerias worth visiting.
