Introducing the Sandwich of the Freak

Last week’s post about the “Viagra sandwich” at Eastern Nights Café prompted a reader to email us a photo she took at the food court of City Stars, a Cairo shopping mall. The Viagra sandwich is usually just a mix of shellfish — not nearly as dubious as the pigeon stock that Egypt’s “fantastic fornicator” King Farouk is said to have downed for breakfast every day. Truth be told, there are many Viagra dishes around town: Viagra ceviche at Tacu Tacu (shrimp, squid, octopus, mussels and Peruvian spices), Viagra empanada at Empanada Mama (seafood stew with shrimps, scallops and crabmeat), Viagra rolls at Yamato and other sushi joints (sea urchin, eel, and avocado), and the Viagra soup at El Nuevo Harlem (disturbingly, no ingredients given). But somehow we still find “grilled Viagra” amusing — maybe just because it’s Friday afternoon and in our mind we’re already over at the Red Lion, downing our third Viagra martini.
