Avenue A Freeze-out: Hopscotch Closed, Lucy’s Uncertain

Speaking of the vanishing East Village, Hopscotch, the “family-friendly (but still totally hip and happenin’)” café that replaced neighborhood stalwart alt.coffee, closed last weekend. We doubt the tots are mourning, but here’s cause for concern: Its neighbor Lucy’s — one of the hood’s beloved dives and its last vestiges of Polish culture — was gated up when we cruised by on two recent weekend nights (including last Friday). We haven’t been able to reach Lucy, the bouffanted babushka who runs the place along with her daughter, but last we spoke to her, she had retirement in mind — let’s hope she’s just on one of her occasional trips to the motherland and the bar will be pouring stiff ones again soon.
