Think Coffee, a Mercer Street favorite among NYU students, is the newest place to plant itself on the Bowery. The coffee, a special blend from Porto Rico Importing Co., is organic and fair trade, and though the espresso is served in smaller portions than at Starbucks, head barista Andrew Cotorceanu assures us it makes for a better espresso-to-milk ratio. Our recommendation: the sweet, thick Spanish variety made with condensed milk and sugar.
The basic café menu at this slightly smaller outpost is pretty much the same — there’s a sandwich with peanut butter, bananas, cinnamon, and honey — but don’t expect Wi-Fi or readings. “The idea we’re really trying to promote,” the handlebar-mustached Cotorceanu says, “is people coming together and talking rather than hanging out and working alone.” Suggested conversation topic: Is the new Varvatos store across the street a tribute to or a shameless capitalization on its predecessor, CBGB?
